photoblog image Castle of Loenen

Castle of Loenen

Castle in Loenen, in Holland. A nice house surrounded by water, handy in case of an attack by the enemy.

TECH-INFO: shot 7 exposures, using a tripod and cable release. Merged them into HDR with Photomatix, performed perspective correction in Photoshop, then tone-mapped it in Photomatix. In Photoshop I used a bunch of masked adjustment layers to enhance contrasts, colors and lighting, though the result of Photomatix was looking already very good.
To make it a bit more interesting I downloaded a couple of textures from the sites CGTextures and Mayang.com. The are free to use them in your images (but read the the full details on the website). I mixed in the clouds two textures of rusty and damaged metal plates. I like the effect but it also looks very good without. You see the usage of textures more and more on sites. Some of them are very beautiful but it's hard to do it right. So I decided to try it more often, just hoping to learn it.

Very nice Paul, think it may look better with a border so it looks more like a photo of a picture, but as you say its all personal preferences, love the image though

HDR and texture layers works well Paul
This is great, like a painting
Looks as thought the learning process is going well, Paul! Wish I had the time to explore such things more.

The result of all your work is very pleasing. It's like you created a classic painting with today's technology. Very nice!

Well done, Paul! The texture works well here - very well. The only downside (if I had to find one) is that it seems a little off-balance, left & right.

It's a strong image with very nice, subtle tones. You did an excellent job processing it to make it look real, not overblown HDR.
Another portfolio image for you Paul. Worth all the effort. I agree with you about the textures - very hard to do well, so that it becomes an essential element of the image and not just filler for a dull area. Congrats!

Great work here. I love the treatment, and the centered composition suits the formality and the exposure is spot on. Really nice.

Just read about the HDR. Now I'm even more impressed. That's a very realistic looking HDR shot. Normally I'm not a big fan of HDR, but you've done it really well here.
