photoblog image The Threatening Cloud

The Threatening Cloud

The weather at the sea can sometimes change very quickly, almost just like in the mountains. Luckily on the beach you have an excellent overview to see what kind of clouds are heading you. The day I took this image it was sunny and nice but suddenly a huge cloud came from over the sea. Highly probably from England :-) If you have a good look you can see it even raining on the sea. Fortunately I had the chance to take a quick snapshot.

TECH-INFO: I have put my camera in RAW mode because I knew I could amplify and dramatize the threatening look of the cloud. Therefore I used HDR tone mapping techniques by developing multiple exposures of one RAW file, merging them into a HDR file and tone mapping it to get maximum contrast. In Photoshop I continued working on the contrasts and colors. Finally I used Noise Ninja to remove some noise in the cloud.

In the beginning I was having doubts to post it or not. I'm not sure about the chosen colors. Though this cloud was really looking so enormous that I had to share it with you. Please let me know what you think.

Almost like a hurricane with the way it converges into the background.
Now this is what I call drama, nice work!

I like the thin line og sea-ground under the impressive cloudy sky!
Nice cloud shot Paul. Not something that is as appealing as usual on account having seen too many clouds and too much rain latelygrin

I think it's a good idea to post; irregular cloud front and awesome horizon did sometime different. Good week.
Wow, that's stunning. The rain in the distance is fantastic. Original choice to shoot this portrait instead of landscape; it paid off.
The cloud is really impressive. The choice of making the horizon line at 1/10 of the picture works well. Maybe the over-exposed bottom right part is a bit too strong.
