Black Mobile Device

It has been several weeks since I participated the VFXY weekly themes, so I had to come up with something. This weeks theme is Mobile Devices. Not an easy one. Especially if you try to be a bit original. So far this is best I could find (if you got any better ideas, don't tell me because I'll be angry on myself). It's a close up of my wife mobile phone, shot with a macro lens. The lighting of the keypad makes it pretty cool.

TECH-INFO: In general I used a bunch of strobist techniques in combination with blending in Photoshop.
The mobile phone is lit in two ways. First, an exposure of 1/10s for the white characters on the keypad (this light comes from the phone itself) together with a bulb hanging on the ceiling which lights the black keys. The latter light has a very warm tone, you can see that at the reflections of the keys and metal parts. Second, the background, which you don't see here, is lit by a very little softbox powered by a speedlight flash. Actually the phone is laying on the softbox. The result is a totally white background, this makes it easier to select the mobile phone during post processing.
To make the actual background more interesting I took a simple shot of the electronics of a hard disk device, lit by just window daylight. In Photoshop I blurred the electronics using Gaussian blue and I set the opacity of the background layer to 55%. Finally I blended it using the multiply mode. I just had to mask out the mobile phone.

fantastic Paul, even before l read the blog l loved the printed circuit board in the background, very imaginative
LightningPaul: Thank you Zed. I was not sure to use the printed circuit board or use a plain white background. But now I'm sure that the electronics in the background add something to the image.
Nice one! I dunno how it looks on your screen but it's a brown mobile to me here.
LightningPaul: You are totally right. Originally the camera is black, but if you exposed it well then it's technically very dark gray. Because I used very warm light, the dark gray became brown. Of course people see what they want to see, so I named it "Black Mobile Device" because in reality it has a black color. Many thanks for your comment, I appreciate it.
great DOF
LightningPaul: Thanks Chantal. Such macro lens opens new worlds (for me).

nice macro with this subject!
LightningPaul: Thank nissou* smile
I love my 35mm lens, it open new worlds for me.
Great shot and great explanations. You are always exhaustive: thanks!
LightningPaul: Thanks Giorgio. I always try to look for something more original. Perhaps I'm taking to many ways.

Not an easy theme, for sure, but i like your shot, it is original. But i tend to look and talk to that thing too muc so i'll just skip to the next one wink.
LightningPaul: Thanks, I'm very happy I obtained to make something original.
Very creative Paul, like the way the DOF falls off over the outer keys. nice processed.
LightningPaul: Thanks a lot for your comment smile
nice bit of DOF as well.
Always hard to think up new and original ideas. This is quite a goody!!
Cheers
Rob
LightningPaul: Many thanks Rob. A limited DOF mostly works well. But I think for macro and close-up photography you are mostly stuck with a limited DOF, unless you take multiple pictures with each a different focus point to merge them to one image with an extended DOF. Perhaps I should try that smile
