Abandoned - The Tower with the Factories

It's been again several weeks since I posted an image of my abandoned series. Shame on me. Especially I have still a bunch of great pictures, of those empty factories, waiting to be processed. All those images are shot in Zyrardow, Poland. It was once the greatest production center of linen on the world. Now you can only see lots of empty red brick buildings scattered over the city. Pretty amazing to see.

In front of those empty factories you see a newly placed fence with a label of a security company. These red brick buildings are all guarded. The big tower is now covered with antennas, probably for television, radio and mobile communications. Behind the red building at the left you see the remainings of a power plant. I you walk 20 meters to the left and use telephoto lens you can make a nice close-up which I posted one here.

TECH-INFO: due to the back light of the sun the contrast was very high. Nine shots of a stop difference were needed. I used DxO Optics pro to do lens corrections of all shots. The program straightens the lines, removes vignetting and reduces lens softness. Then I merged them into HDR file and tone mapped it with Photomatrix Pro.Of course I always save a copy of the original HDR file, because one day we'll be able to watch them on our HDR television screens. I can't wait for this to happen.
Afterwards, in Photoshop, I enhanced and tweaked the colors and contrast of several spots, all using masked adjustment layers. It's a really fun and artistic process (just like tone mapping is). Mainly I made the sky a bit bluer, the snow whiter, the tower is brighter (especially the antennas), the power plant got more contrast, the windows are more shiny, the dark parts are more black and the labels are clearer.

Wonderful use of the wide angle... you have a great eye!
LightningPaul: Thank your Larry. I love shooting with my wide angle.
great angle
LightningPaul: Thanks! I had to tilt my camera a bit to capture the full length of the tower.
Glad you have more of these because it makes for great pictures. I'm undecided about the dramatically leaning buildings but the processing is masterful as always Paul
LightningPaul: Thanks Bill, it motivates me to process the other ones. About the leaning buildings, this is due to holding my camera upwards because I wanted to capture the full tower. To prevent/correct them I had the following options:
a/ keep my camera straight and stand back much more, but then I would have a different perspective and too much foreground (also there was not much place behind me)
b/ use a wider angle but I only have 12mm currently :-(
c/ use a tilt lens, unfortunately a bit too expensive and probably not wide enough at all (they are mostly 24mm or longer)
d/ correct in Photoshop (or DxO) but then I would loose the side parts which would be very sad for the buildings at the right

So I decided to leave like that smile
Perspective is very interesting but the sky with the back light of the sun are wonderful. As always with your PP you achieve a very "natural" image. Well done!
LightningPaul: Thank you Giorgio. I always dreamed of catching a great sky, this time I succeeded. I'm happy you say that I try to get a "natural" looking image. I'm always balancing on keeping it real and make it popping.
A dramatic image Paul, the processing has worked well and the sky is just grand.
LightningPaul: Thanks a lot for your visit and comment. I love the sky too. When I saw this I just knew that this must be a good image.
stunning Paul, great image and great processing toosmile
LightningPaul: Thx Tim, I'm very pleased you like it a lot.
Amazing processing and atmosphere. Great work... always!!
LightningPaul: Many thanks for your comment, it makes me happy smile

Your processing continues to amaze me Paul, wonderful image
LightningPaul: Thank you very much Zed. I'm still boosting my processing skills.
You nailed this one Paul, your processing and techniques are right on the money. Fascinating architecture and you brought out the details and contrasts so very well. Excellent work as usual!
LightningPaul: I'm very honored by your comment. Many thanks!

Buen Hdr, me gusta la profundidad que has logrado y el procesado.
Saludos.
LightningPaul: Thank you Alex. I'm very glad with your comment and visit. More of those buildings will come in the future on my blog.
wow, cool image
Love the perspective.
I might have been tempted to straighten it, but I am not much good at PS stuff
Cheers
Rob
LightningPaul: Thanks Rob. Mostly straighten is what I do in Photoshop (or DxO Optics Pro) but then I would loose the side parts which would be very sad for the buildings at the right. Photoshop is great but it can't do everything (at least not in my hands).
In this case we must enjoy the dramatic view of the leaning buildings smile

I support your explanation; for me the HDR help to obtain colorization as seen in realty. Bravo for this one, unusual deformation but remain beautiful... Please hide this snow and add green turf...
LightningPaul: You're welcome smile Thanks for your comment. These shots are all taken in the winter period, so lots of snow around.
These are stunning, a really good use and demo of HDR!
LightningPaul: Thank you Nigel. I'm very happy you support me in using HDR techniques.

this perspective makes this image a little bit too difficult to "read" for me but I really like the density of the sky. impressive.
LightningPaul: Thanks for your comment. I suppose you talk about the leaning(/falling) buildings, I also prefer them rather straight but here I didn't have much choice. I wrote a more detailed explanation on the reply of Bill on this page.
