Back Lit Body

A picture made for the VFXY theme Human Body. I really wanted to submit something today but it was not easy to find a good idea. Originally I wanted to make a silhouette of a human body. After bothering the people at home for a while I finally found a victim to pose for me (very) quickly. The result turned out to be another kind of image. I hope you like it.

UPDATE: if you are a girl and reading this on the 8th of March then congratulations because of international Women day.

TECH-INFO and STORY: I placed one speedlight flash behind the model to create some strong back light. I snooted the light to avoid spill. Despites it helped still the face and hands got lit. I guess due to reflections on the white walls. Afterwards I realized that it was better to create rim lights using two gridded flashes at both sides a bit behind her. As mentioned above, the "victimized" model only had very little time.

Initially I took my 70-300mm lens to capture her full body but I had to move too much furniture. Again there was no time for that. So I decided to use my 50mm fast prime lens but my camera showed some kind of error message after mounting. Perhaps the electrical contacts were dirty. At that time my model was really running out of time. Close to me was my Lensbaby with plastic optic, so I grabbed it because of lack of alternatives at that time. It's manual focus but it works and it nicely flares the back light (you can see it very well on the image). Full body length shots didn't work out so I came a bit closer. One minute later and the session was over.

Luckily I have chosen RAW format. In ACR I brightened the faces a bit more, since it was not dark enough for a silhouette at all. I added a self shot texture of a metal bump of a crane which was parked at the beach two weeks ago. The texture is blended using soft light mode. I just masked away the body a bit so the pattern mainly forms a kind of background. The left border of the image got darkened because of the too high flash synchronizing time, the right border is done in Photoshop.
Afterwards I converted it to B/W and added a warming filter to tone the image.

It turned out to be totally different then I had planned but I'm happy with the result.

This is a departure for you. Not at all the kind of thing you usually photograph but it's good to try other stuff, right?

I love the background. Great job on that. More lights behind her would have been nice, but it sounds like you were super pressed for time, so you did very well considering that.
LightningPaul: It's indeed something else. I would like to do more with blending textures in the futures though not in the same way as used here. I want it to let the result look very natural, just as if it was not blended. In the image above it's more like some "artistic" thing.
I agree with more lights behind here.
honestly, not for me really. But I like a less manufacture, but your processing skills are evident

cheers
Rob
LightningPaul: Thanks Rob! I still need to learn a lot regarding post processing but I'm experimenting a lot, just like the one above.
and so you should be Paul, great work.
LightningPaul: Thanks Tim!

Awesome! Unique and original. You use sophistical way to obtain this result. Really creative. Bravo.
LightningPaul: You could say I was doing some experimental stuff. But I learned a lot I will use it in the future, so expect more in the future. Thanks for visiting.
Like very much the idea !
LightningPaul: Me too, but I have been thinking about it. Probably I'll redo this one but with another model another pose and better lighting. Thanks for commenting.
