photoblog image Building Windows or Mirrors

Building Windows or Mirrors

A few months ago I promised many more shots of Rotterdam. I slightly forgot about that, sorry, but today I would like to make it up. This is made in the center where you see many great examples of modern architecture. Personally I really like to see and to photograph them.

TECH INFO: one RAW file to capture a much as possible data. First I corrected in DxO Optics Pro the perspective by making the horizontal lines of the building parallel, because during capturing I didn't used a tripod. Afterwards I developed in DxO multiple exposures.
Initially I turned them into a HDR image to tone map them but I could not get something decent. So I used the exposure blending option in Photomatrix. This step made the lighting a bit more balanced but was actually not so worthwhile.

Afterwards I did extra processing in Photoshop. I used twice the curve tool for the bottom part of the building and upper part of the image. I just use the gradient tool and draw a little vertical line across the border of the two parts of the image. It nicely divides the image with a nice transition so that any tweaked part does not have an abrupt border. Here in this image a simple horizontal separation was not enough, I used the eraser brush to add the building at the right to the mask of the lower part (and  excluded it from the mask of the upper part too).
The lower part got a contrast decrease. The upper part a contrast increase, but by mainly focusing on the darker parts. Also I made the sky a bit darker by modifying the blues and the cyans using the select color tool. Finally I used another masked curve adjustment layer for the top part of the sky, where I increase the contrast even more. Again, I just draw a little vertical line on the mask with the gradient tool.

Sounds like lots of work in Photoshop but in fact typing this tech-info takes me more time :-)

UPDATE: there are requests to compare this image with the original one. I made it temporary available here.

I'm becoming more and more impressed with your work all the time, Paul.

And it's good to see ING isn't a few people working out of a garage somewhere. I have a few accounts with them.
LightningPaul: Many thanks for your comments.
Well you see on the image what they do using the money from our accounts :-D
great detail and perspective.
LightningPaul: Thanks! I work hard on revealing lots of details. I posted a link to page with the original image, just in case if you would be interested.

Me parece bestial, tanto por el encuadre como por la profundidad de campo, la composicion y sobretodo los reflejos tan nitidos....saludos.
LightningPaul: Thank you Alex. I'm glad you like the composition and reflections a lot.
it is so great to work with reflections and shadows
LightningPaul: Thank you Chantal.
The reflection on this is superb. In general I am not fond of most modern buildings, I photograph them so that I can complain about them usuallygrin
LightningPaul: Haha, funny comment you wrote smile
Quel reflet! J'ai vraiment l'impression que les nuages poursuivent leur route dans l'immeuble. Une belle réussite!
LightningPaul: It's an illusion but at the moment I took this image I had the same feeling.
A well taken chance to pohotograph this marvellous reflection.
LightningPaul: Thanks Brian!
I do like these type of reflection shots Paul and this is a good one, you have caught the building just right.
LightningPaul: Many thanks for your comment. In case if you would be interested, I posted a link to page with the original image.

Where the building ends and the skies begin? smile
The fact that there is another building is reflected there is a great bonus.
Splendid!
LightningPaul: I love such modern buildings, you can easily play with the reflections. I took a good one in La Defense in Paris. I should post it soon.

A pity I have no comparison with the original picture, but I think that I might have preferred the non processed picture. Sorry. Excuse me to be so frank
LightningPaul: No excuses needed, I really appreciate it that you give your opinion. I opened another account to post temporary some of my original images when requested. See for the original image here: http://unprocessedlp.shutterchance.com/photoblog/Building_Windows_or_Mirrors_/
