Toilet Door Handle

The last gate to 2009 :-)

I noticed this intriguing but fantastic rusty object while sitting on the toilet of an older house. Enjoy the close look of this funny door handle.

TECH-INFO: I wanted to capture the same close-up feeling as I had. To get this perspective I had to use my fish eye lens which focuses as close as 14 cm. There was only a bulb to light the room. Using the white walls (not visible on the image) I calibrated my white balance. Those walls nicely diffuse the small light source. Due to the little amount of light I had to set my ISO rather high. I managed to setup my tripod in this small room. Finally I used a cable release to minimize camera shake.

Five JPG shots with a stop difference were made. The middle exposure time is 6 seconds. I merged them into Photomatrix to a HDR image and tone mapped it back to a JPG which reveals all the details and texture. Finally I boosted the contrast and added a big vignette in Photoshop Elements.

As you can see in the EXIF info, the aperture is f/8.0, it is an extremely wide angle of 10.0mm and the DOF is still very limited. This prooves that not everything in an image is automatically sharp when using wide angle lenses.

This is almost 3D, I can alomost reach in an touch that handle. Cool image.
LightningPaul: You're right. I didn't realize it was so 3D. I'll keep this in mind and I'll use it in the future for other photographing other objects. Many thanks for your comment and visit.

Not when you get that close, no. But it's a great effect nonetheless. I really like this shot quite a bit. Very well done, sir.

Now I want a 10 or 12mm!

Happy New Year, Paul.
LightningPaul: I'm happy you agree. But some claim they hardly need to focus when using a fish eye lens.
The fish eye lens is a Tokina 10-17mm DX format (so not for full frame, only crop factor). They make it for Nikon, Canon and perhaps others too. Pentax has exactly the same lens.
It is important that it can focus very close (here 14 cm), because the distance to the subject determines the perspective (zooming is a kind of cropping without loosing pixels).
I wish you all the best for the New Year.
What a job for a little door handle!

The result is beautiful.

You master a lot of technique very much.
LightningPaul: Many thanks for your kind comment. I'm glad you appreciate the technical side of the image.
A fine result for your efforts Paul. I suspect quite a few people will be seeing the new year in in the toilet!!!

Happy new year
LightningPaul: LOL smile
Have a great New Year Eve.
Great shot Paul. We just feel like grabbing the handle!
Have a joyful Newx Year's Eve.
LightningPaul: Thank you smile
Happy New Year for you.
Love this. There is a depth to it that is outstanding. Partly the depth of field, partly the rich colors. Very, very nice.
That last gate to 2009 being a toilet door is somehow worrisome.
Happy New Year!
LightningPaul: Some people might spend the beginning of the new year in the toilet :-D
Have a great New Year Eve. Thanks for commenting and visiting.

A lovely shot I love the feeling of warmth, and as has already been said you really could just reach out and grab it....remarkable effort.

All the very best for 2009
LightningPaul: After reading all the comments I must come to the conclusion it has (almost) all the elements to create depth: the right lighting, close up perspective + wide angle and the shallow DOF.
Many thanks for your visit, comment and wishes. All the best for you and your family in 2009.
Very engaging image. The fisheye lens was a wise choice here; as it does not overpower your subject (with its inherent purpose) but rather compliments the mood and purpose.
LightningPaul: Thank you for commenting. I appreciate it.
Strange result ! I like very much !
LightningPaul: Thank you very much for your comment.
wow...
LightningPaul: I'm glad to hear that smile
